Biography
Matt has over fifteen years of experience advising residential mortgage and real estate companies in regulatory compliance and enforcement matters related to marketing and advertising, fair lending, loan originator compensation, disclosure requirements, and licensing.
In addition to his decade of private practice experience, Matt spent five years in-house as a legal, compliance, and operations executive for a mortgage, real estate, and title/settlement company. In that capacity, he oversaw legal and regulatory compliance, represented the company before numerous federal and state agencies, advised the company on its legal obligations to investor and warehouse bank partners, and managed functions related to quality control, processing, underwriting, closing, title/settlement, and post-closing. Matt’s in-depth understanding of both the day-to-day and strategic considerations involved in running a mortgage and real estate business enables him to provide efficient, practical, and business-friendly legal advice to clients.
Matt has represented mortgage and real estate companies in examinations and investigations initiated by state and federal agencies, including the CFPB, DOJ, HUD, state regulators, and state attorneys general. Those matters have involved alleged findings and violations related to RESPA Section 8, TILA, including the TRID and LO Compensation Rules, ECOA, the Fair Housing Act, the SAFE Act, FCRA, the UDAAP provisions, GLBA, and applicable state laws. Matt has also represented mortgage lenders in connection with issues arising in the secondary market, including repurchase and indemnification demands.
